hey y’all!  i’m melissa and i blog over at simply sweet melissa.  today i couldn’t be more excited to be taking over mary-katherine’s blog, and i am so jealous that she is in ITALY as we speak!  not only is mk one of my favorite blogging friends, but we also have a lot in common…one thing being our love for traveling.  and so i though, what better way to showcase my passion for travel than with a post about one of my favorite places i’ve recently been to?  so today you’ll hear about charleston, sc!  if you’ve never been, then i hope this post gives you some insight into some of my favorite places to shop, dine, relax and explore.  if on the other hand you have been lucky enough to visit, then you know what i mean when i say that charleston is nothing but charming, quaint and all things southern hospitality!

a few months ago, my boyfriend will and i took a mini-vacation down south to a city neither of us had ever been to.  will was in charge of finding and booking us a hotel room, and i was in charge of getting recommendations for places to go eat, shop and play.  what i thought might have been a hard task ended up being a piece of cake because the number of places that were recommended to me where more than enough!  in terms of places to stay, will decided on the historic renaissance hotel, which was not only a lovely hotel, but also within walking distance to some of charleston’s main attractions.

while in charleston i have a handful of places i feel everyone should go at least once, if not more.  but where do i begin?  let’s see… i’ll start with a beloved king street.  king street is the place to go to get all of your shopping done.  some of my favorite stores we checked out included worthwhile, sassy shortcake boutique, v2v and the vault.  after doing a little shopping, i recommend getting a bite to eat.  whether you are looking to get brunch or dinner the choices are endless!  for some good ole’ lowcountry style southern good try virginia’s on king or poogan’s porch for brunch, blossom or high cotton for dinner, or the rooftop for drinks and beautiful views.  we can attest to all of these being lip smackin’ good!

now depending on how full you are from eating a good meal, you might want to go back to the hotel to take a nap but i recommend taking a stroll through the market where you can find anything form fresh produce to antique items.  it’s a good place to walk off those calories you just ate and you can also engage with the gullah ladies as they weave and sell handmade sweetgrass baskets!

if you’re looking for something more relaxing, make the quick drive towards rainbow row and stroll through the battery and the nearby waterfront park.  make sure you have your camera handy, as this area is full of all things lovely.  from the bright colorful mansions, large oak trees, and water fountains, you’ll want to capture all of these things.  and if you stay just long enough, you’ll even get to watch sailboats and ships heading in and out of the harbor.  want to go to the beach?  luckily, sullivan’s island, isle of palms, and folly beach are all close by!  to get to any of these locations, you’ll have to drive over the arthur ravenel jr. bridge!  the construction and views from the bridge are gorgeous at sunset…trust me!

and that’s it, friends!  some of my favorite things in charleston!  i hope you have the opportunity to explore this amazing city and all that it has to offer!

be sure to check out my blog as i have another fun vacation planned coming up in april that i can’t wait to share!
