We all want to be like our bigger sisters, right? I distinctly remember when I was in the sixth grade and my older sister came home from college wearing these pants she called “gauchos”. I begged my mom and that Christmas I unwrapped a pair of fold-top jersey gauchos. When I wore them to school for a dress-up day, my teacher noted that she remembered “culottes” from back in her day and I was like “Umm, rude, these are gauchos and I am not an old woman!” It was at that moment that I learned that the two terms are pretty interchangeable and that style comes around in circles.
Fast forward to today when the styles of the 90s and 2000s are coming back again with a fresh and retro spin. Girls, the culottes are here again; this time around in more sophisticated shapes and elegant fabrics. When I tried on these high-rise pleated culottes from Old Navy, I was sold. These are made of a really thick, soft fabric with a bit of spandex so they are extra comfortable and the pleating is really flattering. I styled mine in a more casual street style fashion because that’s more my style but I also love the idea of culottes with a simple pair of pumps and a silk blouse. One thing to note: be careful when wearing flats with cropped, wide leg pants. Be sure to pick a pointed flat with no angle straps to lengthen your legs and not cut you off!
Are you on board the culottes train? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
